Welcome to this week’s Black Arrow Cyber Threat Briefing – a weekly digest, collated and curated by our cyber experts to provide senior and middle management with an easy to digest round up of the most notable threats, vulnerabilities and cyber related news from the last week.


Threats

Ransomware

Ransomware is growing and growing and getting worse all the time, with the G7 this week warning of ‘a tidal wave of ransomware attacks’ [source]. It is fast approaching becoming such a problem that it may soon reach epidemic status with few organisations left unaffected as firm after firm falls victim.

The ransomware gangs have turned crime into a multi-million pound business empire, it is estimated that $7.5 billion was extorted from victims last year in the United States alone [source], putting any legitimate industry or business sector to shame in term of meteoric growth. This is not small scale actors working out of their bedrooms, they have customer support centres and 24/7 helplines, they have plush offices and flash cars, paid for by the victims of their crimes, paid for by firms like yours paying ransoms.

And here's how attackers are getting in: in nearly half (47%) of ransomware cases gangs used the open remote desktop protocol, a tool that has been used by many companies to help staff work from home, but which can also give attackers a way in if it is not correctly secured.

More than a quarter (26%) of cases were traced back to a phishing email, and a smaller number used specific vulnerability exploits (17%), including Citrix NetScaler CVE-2019-19781 and Pulse VPN CVE-2019-11510. This was followed by account takeovers, at 10%. [source]

Criminal gangs have earned so much money and power they are now outsourcing much of the labour, allowing them to live of their spoils while their empires continue to grow, while they do next to nothing, with more and more joining their ranks [source]

As long as even a small number of victims pay the ransom this remains highly lucrative for attackers.

The ransom for Software AG is $23m, but they will demand much smaller sums from much smaller firms – so how are they doing this? Are larger firms being specifically targeted with tailored phishing campaigns, where they hope they will get lucky in getting an employee to fall for the bait, where lower value targets are being hit with machine/algorithmic generated phishing attacks, with lower levels of sophistication and more of a ‘spray and pray’ approach, hoping casting a wide enough net will still result in larger numbers of lower value victims.

We keep trying to warn firms how bad this is getting, and we don’t do this to drum up business, we do this because we are hugely concerned about the direction this is going and how damaging this can be for any firm.

Many firms are reluctant to take cyber security seriously, believing it won’t happen to them, but it is happening to firm after firm after firm who believed it wouldn’t happen to them. It’s too late to start thinking about what you should have done after you’ve become a victim, it’s far better, and far cheaper, to take steps to avoid being a victim in the first place than trying to recover or pay the ransom.

Of the increasing number of firms that do go hit, many don’t survive, and those that do often find things are never the same again, with impacts on confidence levels in your staff and in your IT and information security departments [source]

Ransomware is not only affecting desktops, laptops and servers, but also now increasingly Android and other mobile platforms [source]

Protecting against ransomware is not a luxury or something that can kicked down the road to look at another day, firms need to ensure they are protecting themselves against this threat now – before they become a victim.


Notable ransomware victims of the last week

There have been a number of high profile victims of ransomware in the last week, notably Software AG, a German conglomerate with operations in more than 70 countries, which was attacked by the Clop group who are threatening to dump stolen data if the $23 million ransom is not paid.

Carnival Cruises were hit with ransomware affecting data and personal information for guests, employees and crew for Carnival Cruises, Holland America and Seabourn as well as casino operations.

Early indications point to the disruption being experiences by Hackney Council with their systems stemming from a ransomware attack, although this has not been confirmed.


BEC

BEC Attacks: Nigeria No Longer the Epicentre as Losses top $26B

Business Email Compromise (BEC) Fraudsters now have bases of operation across at least 39 countries and are responsible for $26 billion in losses annually, and growing.

A study of more than 9,000 instances of BEC attacks all over the world shows that the number has skyrocketed over the past year, and that the social-engineering scam has expanded well beyond its historic roots in Nigeria.

Why this matters:

A recent report entitled The Global Reach of Business Email Compromise, found that these attacks cost businesses a staggering $26 billion every year. And that trend appears to be accelerating. In fact, researchers found BEC attacks currently make up a full 40 percent of cyber crime losses globally, impacting at least 177 countries.

For context, the Anti-Phishing Working Group recently find that the average wire transfer in a BEC scan is around $80,000.

In a BEC attack, a scammer impersonates a company executive or other trusted party and tries to trick an employee responsible for payments or other financial transactions into writing money to a bogus account. Attackers usually conduct a fair amount of recon work, studying executive styles and uncovering the organisations vendors, billing system practices and other information to help mount a convincing attack.

Trickbot back after disruption attempts

The Trickbot botnet looks to be working once again, despite separate efforts in the past few weeks aimed at disrupting its operation.

Earlier this month the Emotet spam botnet – which is often the precursor to TrickBot being loaded onto a system – began receiving spam templates intended for mass distribution. These spam templates contained Microsoft Word document attachments with malicious macros that fetch and load a copy of Emotet onto the victim machine. The Emotet bot reached out to its controllers and received commands to download and execute Trickbot on victim machines.

The Trickbot group tag that researchers identified is tied to a typical infection campaign that information security researchers have been observing for the past 6 months or more.

Additionally, Intel 471 researchers saw an update to the Trickbot plugin server configuration file. Fifteen server addresses were added, and two old servers were retained in the configuration, along with the server’s ‘.onion’ address. This was likely done as a fix that would help operators maintain that their infrastructure remains operational. [link]

Why this matters:

The fix is another round in the back-and-forth between Trickbot’s operators and the separate public and private sector parties that have attempted to disrupt the botnet’s actions. This includes actions by the US Cyber Command and Microsoft, who issued a public statement that it had taken legal action to “combat ransomware ahead of U.S. elections.” The legal action involved Microsoft attempting to disrupt a number of Trickbot command and control server IP addresses in the United States.

The fact that Trickbot has resumed normal operations despite the best efforts of the likes of the US Cyber Command and Microsoft shows how resilient of an operation Trickbot is, and how much more effort is needed to fully take the botnet offline for good. The botnet’s operators have all the IT support of legitimate enterprises – continuity planning, backups, automated deployment, and a dedicated workforce – that allow them to quickly react to disruptive measures.

Vulnerabilities

Microsoft October 2020 Patch Tuesday fixes 87 vulnerabilities

Microsoft this week released its monthly batch of security updates known as Patch Tuesday, and this month the OS maker has patched 87 vulnerabilities across a wide range Microsoft products.

By far, the most dangerous bug patched this month is CVE-2020-16898. Described as a remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability in the Windows TCP/IP stack, this bug can allow attackers to take over Windows systems by sending malicious ICMPv6 Router Advertisement packets to an unpatched computer via a network connection.

Another bug to keep an eye on is CVE-2020-16947, a remote code execution issue in Outlook. Microsoft says this bug can be exploited by tricking a user to open a specially crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Outlook software. [source1] [source2]

Why this matters:

The bug was discovered internally by Microsoft engineers, and OS versions vulnerable to CVE-2020-16898 include Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019.

With a severity score of 9.8 out of a maximum 10, Microsoft considers the bug dangerous and likely to be weaponised, and rightfully so.

Patching the bug is recommended, but workarounds such as disabling ICMPv6 RDNSS support also exist, which would allow system administrators to deploy temporary mitigations until they quality-test this month’s security updates for any OS-crashing bugs.

Critical SonicWall VPN Portal Bug Allows DoS, Worming RCE

A critical security bug in the SonicWall VPN Portal can be used to crash the device and prevent users from connecting to corporate resources. It could also open the door to remote code execution (RCE), researchers said.

The flaw (CVE-2020-5135) is a stack-based buffer overflow in the SonicWall Network Security Applicance (NSA). According to researchers who discovered it, the flaw exists within HTTP/HTTPS service used for product management and SSL VPN remote access. [source]

Why this matters:

An unskilled attacker could trigger a persistent denial-of-service condition using an unauthenticated HTTP request involving a custom protocol handler.

Adding insult to injury, this particular flaw exists in a pre-authentication routine, and within a component (SSL VPN) which is typically exposed to the public internet.

 ‘More Than A Billion’ Phone Wide Open To ‘Backdoor’ Remote Code Execution in Adtech Company’s Code

Malicious code impacting more than a billion smartphone owners is currently in the wild and enabling remote code execution. [source]

Why this matters:

Remote code execution is a very serious security violation, and basically enables the owner of that code do almost anything they want on your phone.


Miscellaneous Cyber News of the Weeks

Malware gangs love open source offensive hacking tools

In the cyber security field, the term OST (Open Source Tools) refers to software apps, libraries, and exploits that possess offensive hacking capabilities and have been released as either free downloads or under an open source license.

OST projects are usually released to provide a proof-of-concept exploit for a new vulnerability, to demonstrate a new (or old) hacking technique, or as penetration testing utilities shared with the community.

These discussions have been taking place for more than a decade. However, they have always been based on personal experiences and convictions, and never on actual raw data.

That changed this week when a security researcher compiled data on 129 open source offensive hacking tools and searched through malware samples and cyber-security reports to discover how widespread was the adoption of OST projects among hacking groups — such as low-level malware gangs, elite financial crime groups, and even nation-state sponsored APTs. Why this matters:

Today, OST is one of the most (if not the most) controversial topics in the information security  community.

On one side, you have the people who are in favour of releasing such tools, arguing that they can help defenders learn and prepare systems and networks for future attacks.

On the opposing side, you have the ones who say that OST projects help attackers reduce the costs of developing their own tools and hiding activities into a cloud of tests and legitimate pen-tests.

Fitbit Spyware Steals Personal Data via Watch Face

A researcher has found they can take advantage of lax Fitbit privacy controls to build a malicious spyware watch face.

A wide-open app-building API (Application Programming Interface) could allow an attacker to build a malicious application that could access Fitbit user data, and send it to any server.

A proof-of-concept was created to do just that, after realizing that Fitbit devices are loaded with sensitive personal data. [source]

Why this matters:

Essentially, the API could send device type, location and user information including gender, age, height, heart rate and weight and it could also access calendar information. While this doesn’t include PII profile data, the calendar invites could expose additional information such as names and locations.

The researcher was able to make the app available through the Fitbit Gallery (where Fitbit showcases various third-party and in-house apps). Thus, the spyware appears legitimate, and increase the likelihood it would be downloaded.

Jersey based insurance firm Ardonagh Group disabled 200 admin accounts as ransomware infection took hold

Jersey-headquartered insurance company Ardonagh Group has suffered a potential ransomware infection.

Reports indicated that the insurance firm had been forced to suspend 200 internal accounts with admin privileges as the "cyber incident" progressed through its IT estate.

The UK's second largest privately owned insurance broker, according to the Financial Times, Ardonagh Group has spent the year to date acquiring other companies.

The timing of the most recent attack is unfortunate: Ardonagh recently published its financials, showing a loss of £94.m, according to reports.

Why this matters:

Whilst there is nothing to suggest these attacks are linked this attack comes a week after US insurance giant Gallagher was also hit with ransomware.

No firm is immune to being hit with ransomware, no matter how good they think their defences are, and then it comes down to how well you had planned for ransomware happening and how capable you are to recover and get the business back on its feet.

Boards Increase Investment in Cyber security in Face of Threats and Regulatory Fines

Board decisions on cyber security spending are slowly improving following the impact of regulatory fines and COVID-19.

According to research surveying 908 senior IT security decision makers working within organisations with more than 500 employees, 58% plan to add more security budget in the next 12 months.

Amid growing cyber threats and rising risks through the COVID crisis, CISOs report that boards are listening and stepping up with increased budget for cyber security, with 91% agreeing that their board adequately supports them with investment.

Retro-fixing of security to remote working tools was “a path and direction most organisations have been going down, however it was always a lower priority.”

COVID-19 has accelerated the investment into both cloud and remote working budgets, and this includes the need for secure remote access and the ability to access from any location. Having a CISO on the board is helping ensure technology that supports remote working environments are also secure by design.

Why this matters:

Boards are definitely listening and stepping up with increased budget for cyber security, however many firms still tend to view any investment as a cost rather than adding business value.  There is still some way to go, boards mainly approve investments after a security incident or through fear of regulatory penalties for non-compliance which shows that cyber security investment decisions are more about insurance than about any desire to lead the field which, in the long run, limits the industry’s ability to keep pace with the cyber-criminals.

Online Romance Scams Spike Under Lockdown

Police and banks are celebrating after revealing that £19 million in fraud was stopped in the first half of the year, although romance scams are reportedly on the rise.

Over 600 reports of romance scams were made each month in June, July and August, contributing to a 26% year-on-year increase in cases recorded by Action Fraud, according to Sky News.

These are typically confidence tricks where a vulnerable individual is contacted via a dating site and financially exploited or unwittingly used as a money mule.

Why this matters:

Over 19,400 such crimes were logged with the FBI last year, making it the second highest earner for cyber-criminals after business email compromise (BEC). Over $475 million was lost to romance scammers in 2019, the law enforcement agency said.

In the UK, losses are said to have exceeded £66 million between August 2019 and August 2020. As a result, various dating sites, banking groups and police are running a “Take Five” awareness campaign designed to warn users of the dangers posed by internet scammers.

The spike in romance scams coincided with COVID-19 lockdowns in the UK and much of the rest of the world, and a subsequent shift in crime and fraud online.

Action Fraud claimed it saw an increase in reported attacks in the first month of lockdown, to nearly 4000. UK Finance last month claimed that fraudsters are increasingly shifting their operations online.

However, Action Fraud also revealed this week that millions of pounds worth of fraud has been prevented so far this year thanks to a Banking Protocol first introduced three years ago.

The initiative enables banking staff in branches to alert their local police force when they suspect a customer is being scammed, for example if they are transferring or withdrawing large sums of money. It has been used to good effect to stop romance fraud, and impersonation scams, Action Fraud claimed.

In addition to the £19.3 million in fraud allegedly prevented, 100 arrests were made in the first half of the year.

WEF: Cyber-Attacks Remain Top Business Risk in the West

Cyber-attacks have dropped down the pecking order in terms of top global business risks but remain high on the priority list in North America and Europe, according to the latest World Economic Forum (WEF) data.

The annual Regional Risks for Doing Business report is compiled from over 12,000 responses from business leaders in 127 countries. They are presented with a pre-selected list of 30 global risks and asked to choose the five that they believe to be of most concern for doing business in their country over the next decade.

Why this matters:

Unsurprisingly given the current financial and healthcare crisis, the top two global risks were unemployment and spread of infectious disease, followed by fiscal crisis. Spread of infectious disease also topped the priority list for business leaders regionally in Europe, Eurasia and East Asia and the Pacific.

However, although cyber-attacks fell from second place globally last year to fourth, they are still top-of-mind in the West.

They were named the number one risk of the next decade by North American business leaders, garnering a share of 55% versus infectious diseases in second with 30%. Cyber-risk was placed second in Europe but first in the UK, with 56% versus fiscal crises in second with 45%.

Ransomware: Surge in attacks as hackers take advantage of organisations under pressure

The number of ransomware attacks has significantly grown over the past few months as cyber criminals look to cash in on security vulnerabilities opened up by the rise in remote working.

Researchers at cyber security company Check Point said the number of daily ransomware attacks across the globe has increased by half over the past three months – and that they've almost doubled in the US.

Why this matters:

One of the reasons ransomware attacks are on the rise is because of the swift switch to remote working that has forced many people to work from home for the first time, something that could leave them vulnerable to phishing emails and malware attacks, especially on a home network that likely won't be as secure as an enterprise environment.

Working from home also makes monitoring devices for malicious activity harder for information security teams than it would be if every user was under one roof, providing hackers with a better chance of going about their business unnoticed.

Amazon Prime Day Spurs Spike in Phishing, Fraud Attacks

Cyber criminals are tapping into Amazon’s annual discount shopping campaign for subscribers, Prime Day, with researchers warning of a recent spike in phishing and malicious websites that are fraudulently using the Amazon brand.

There has been a spike in the number of new monthly phishing and fraudulent sites created using the Amazon brand since August, the most significant since the COVID-19 pandemic forced people indoors in March, according to a new report published this week.

Why this matters:

As shoppers gear up for two days of great deals, cyber criminals are preparing to prey on the unwary, taking advantage of those who let their guard down to snap up bargains.

Prime Day actually happens over two days—this year the event falls on Oct. 13 to 14. Amazon Prime customers enjoy special sales and discounts on top brands to mark the biggest shopping event of the year on the online retail giant’s site.

Amazon last year yielded over $7 billion in sales during the 36-hour event, which could go even bigger this year due to “the decline of brick and mortar retail and the close proximity to the holidays,” researchers noted. Indeed, mandatory stay-at-home orders globally that began with the COVID-19 pandemic in March have significantly boosted Amazon’s business, a trend that shows no signs of abating.

Microsoft warns of Android ransomware that activates when you press the Home button

A new strain of mobile ransomware abuses the mechanisms behind the "incoming call" notification and the "Home" button to lock screens on users' devices.

Named AndroidOS/MalLocker.B, the ransomware is hidden inside Android apps offered for download on online forums and third-party websites.

Just like most Android ransomware strains, MalLocker.B doesn't actually encrypt the victim's files but merely prevents access to the rest of the phone.

Once installed, the ransomware takes over the phone's screen and prevents the user from dismissing the ransom note — which is designed to look like a message from local law enforcement telling users they committed a crime and need to pay a fine.

Why this matters:

Ransomware posing as fake police fines has been the most popular form of Android ransomware for more than half a decade now.

Across time, these malware strains have abused various functions of the Android operating systems in order to keep users locked on their home screen.

Past techniques included abusing the System Alert window or disabling the functions that interface with the phone's physical buttons.

MalLocker.B comes with a new variation of these techniques.

The ransomware uses a two-part mechanism to show its ransom note.

The first part abuses the "call" notification. This is the function that activates for incoming calls to show details about the caller, and MalLocker.B uses it to show a window that covers the entire area of the screen with details about the incoming call.

The second part abuses the "onUserLeaveHint()" function. This function is called when users want to push an app into the background and switch to a new app, and it triggers when pressing buttons like Home or Recents. MalLocker.B abuses this function to bring its ransom note back into the foreground and prevent the user from leaving the ransom note for the home screen or another app.

The abuse of these two functions is a new and never-before-seen trick, but ransomware that hijacks the Home button has been seen before.

Suspected Chinese Hackers Unleash Malware That Can Survive OS Reinstalls

Chinese hackers may be using malware that can survive Windows OS reinstalls to spy on computers.

Security firm Kaspersky Lab uncovered the malware, which exploits a computer’s UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) to continually persist on a Windows machine. 

Why this matters:

Attacking the UEFI is pretty alarming because the software is used to boot up your computer and load the operating system. It also operates separately from your computer’s main hard drive, and usually resides in the motherboard’s SPI flash memory as firmware. As a result, any malicious process embedded in the UEFI can survive an operating system reinstall while evading traditional antivirus solutions. This attack shows that in exceptional cases actors are willing to go to great lengths in order to gain the highest level of persistence on a victim’s machine.

New HEH botnet can wipe routers and IoT devices

A newly discovered botnet contains code that can wipe all data from infected systems, such as routers, servers, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Named HEH, the botnet spreads by launching brute-force attacks against any internet-connected system that has its Telnet ports (23 and 2323) exposed online.

If the device uses default or easy-to-guess Telnet credentials, the botnet gains access to the system, where it immediately downloads one of seven binaries that install the HEH malware.

Why this matters:

This HEH malware doesn't contain any offensive features, such as the ability to launch DDoS attacks, the ability to install crypto-miners, or code to run proxies and relay traffic for bad actors.

The only features present are a function that ensnares infected devices and coerces them to perform Telnet brute-force attacks across the internet to help amplify the botnet; a feature that lets attackers run Shell commands on the infected device; and a variation of this second feature that executes a list of predefined Shell operations that wipe all the device's partitions.


US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) warns that Emotet malware is one of the most prevalent threats today

The malware known as Emotet has emerged as “one of the most prevalent ongoing threats” as it increasingly targets state and local governments and infects them with other malware, the cybersecurity arm of the Department of Homeland Security said on Tuesday.

Why this matters:

Emotet was first identified in 2014 as a relatively simple trojan for stealing banking account credentials. Within a year or two, it had reinvented itself as a formidable downloader or dropper that, after infecting a PC, installed other malware. The Trickbot banking trojan and the Ryuk ransomware are two of the more common follow-ons. Over the past month, Emotet has successfully burrowed into Quebec’s Department of Justice and increased its onslaught on governments in France, Japan, and New Zealand. It has also targeted the Democratic National Committee and numerous other US state and local government agencies.

Hackers exploit Windows Error Reporting service in new fileless attack

A new fileless attack technique that abuses the Microsoft Windows Error Reporting (WER) service is the work of a hacking group that is yet to be identified.

According to researchers the attack vector relies on malware burying itself in WER-based executables to avoid arousing suspicion.

In a blog post on Tuesday the researchers said the new "Kraken" attack -- albeit not a completely novel technique in itself -- was detected on September 17.

A lure phishing document found by the research team was packaged up in a .ZIP file. Titled, "Compensation manual.doc," the file claims to contain information relating to worker compensation rights, but when opened, is able to trigger a malicious macro.

Why this matters:

The macro leads to a payload injected a process connected to the WER service and used by Microsoft to track and address operating system errors.

That reporting service, WerFault.exe, is usually invoked when an error related to the operating system, Windows features, or applications happens," Malwarebytes says. "When victims see WerFault.exe running on their machine, they probably assume that some error happened, while in this case they have actually been targeted in an attack.

Ransomware: from Entry to Ransom in Under 45 Minutes

Ransomware gangs are performing wide-ranging internet scans to find vulnerable systems and then accelerating attacks to just minutes to capitalize on COVID-19, Microsoft has warned in a blog post introducing the firm’s latest Digital Defense Report

The report claimed that threat actors have “rapidly increased sophistication” over the past year, with ransomware the number one reason for Microsoft incident response between October 2019 and July 2020.

“Attackers have exploited the COVID-19 crisis to reduce their dwell time within a victim’s system — compromising, exfiltrating data and, in some cases, ransoming quickly — apparently believing that there would be an increased willingness to pay as a result of the outbreak. In some instances, cyber-criminals went from initial entry to ransoming the entire network in under 45 minutes”.

“At the same time, we also see that human-operated ransomware gangs are performing massive, wide-ranging sweeps of the internet, searching for vulnerable entry points, as they ‘bank’ access – waiting for a time that is advantageous to their purpose.”

Why this matters:

Not only are attackers speeding up attacks, attackers have also become more sophisticated in performing reconnaissance on high-value targets, so that they appear to know when certain factors like holidays will reduce the victim organisation’s chances of patching, or otherwise hardening their networks.

They’re also aware of how billing cycles operate in certain industries, and thus when specific targets may be more willing to pay.

Business are concerned their companies will be collateral damage in a future cyber-war

Businesses are worrying about being caught in the crossfire of cyber warfare, according to research from Bitdefender – while industry figures warn that the gap between common-or-garden cyber threats and what nation states are doing is becoming smaller and smaller.

Bitdefender’s latest report, titled 10 in 10, surveyed around 6,000 C-suite executives responsible for cyber security and found “over a fifth” said that cyber warfare was one of the most challenging topics they had to convince their colleagues to take seriously.

Bitdefender don’t think these executives are afraid of cyber warfare in the sense of directly being targeted, more in line with being collateral victims of cyber warfare taking out electric power grids, internet. They need to be prepared for these kind of attacks.

Why this matters:

Cyber warfare, at its simplest, involves disrupting computers to achieve a real-world effect. This could be something like a denial-of-service (DoS) attack against a power grid, intended to cause a power outage, or the infamous Stuxnet malware infection that set back Iran’s nuclear weapon ambitions by several years. It could also include attacks designed to degrade an adversary’s own ability to mount cyber attacks; cyber on cyber.

An attack by one nation against another nation could have significant impact on the ability of a business to continue to operate, either in the short term or over the longer term.

Ransomware hits US-based Arthur J. Gallagher insurance giant

US-based Arthur J. Gallagher (AJG) global insurance brokerage and risk management firm confirmed a ransomware attack that hit its systems on Saturday.

AJG is one of the largest insurance brokers in the world with more than 33,300 employees and operations in 49 countries, including Rossborough in Guernsey.

The company is ranked 429 on the Fortune 500 list and it provides insurance services to customers in over 150 countries.

AJG says that it detected the ransomware attack on September 26, 2020, with only a limited number of the company's internal systems being affected, but that they shut down all computing systems to block the attack

"We promptly took all of our global systems offline as a precautionary measure, initiated response protocols, launched an investigation, engaged the services of external cyber security and forensics professionals, and implemented our business continuity plans to minimize disruption to our customers," the company added on September 28th in an filing with US regulators.

Why this matters:

Firms everywhere are being hit with ransomware and the speed, frequency, and sophistication of these attacks is only going to carry on getting worse. Firms must ensure they are prepared for an attack ahead of an attack happening and ensure they have plans in place to be able to recover. Most ransomware starts with a user clicking on a link in an email or downloading an attachment so firms must ensure their staff realise the role they play in defending their organisations – this is not something that IT alone can protect firms against.

Paying ransomware demands could land you in hot water with authorities and regulators

Businesses, governments, and organisations that are hit by crippling ransomware attacks now have a new worry to contend with—big fines from authorities and regulators, such as the US Department of Treasury, in the event that they pay to recover their data.

US Treasury Department officials made that guidance official in an advisory published this week. It warns that payments made to specific entities or to any entity in certain countries—specifically, those with a designated “sanctions nexus”—could subject the payer to financial penalties levied by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC.

The prohibition applies not only to the group that is infected but also to any companies or contractors the hacked group’s security or insurance engages with, including those who provide insurance, digital forensics, and incident response, as well as all financial services that help facilitate or process ransom payments.

Why this matters:

Payments made to criminal groups, sanctioned groups or individuals, or otherwise making a payment that could be funding terrorism will fall foul of regulations in most regulated jurisdictions. The last thing a firm will need is having to recover from the ransomware attack and also then being hit with fines from regulators and authorities.

CIOs say security must adapt to permanent work-from-home

Both private- and public-sector CIOs see many more employees permanently working remotely, and say security needs to adapt to new threats and how they communicate.

Much of the public and private sector was forced to shut down in-person facilities and operations almost overnight in March as COVID quarantines began. The new conditions forced organisations to quickly find ways to secure tens of millions of new, vulnerable endpoints created by at-home workers. Now, six months later, technology leaders are taking stock of what happened and considering how a post-COVID landscape might look.

COVID has resulted in a lot of changes and is behind a lot of innovation but it looks like some places will be putting up with these short term measures for longer than originally planned.

What might have been OK as a short term fix needs to become ‘business as usual’ and security controls will need to be adapted to these more permanent new ways of working.

DDoS attacks are getting more powerful as attackers change tactics

There's been a surge in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks throughout the course of this year, and the attacks are getting more powerful and more disruptive.

Why this matters:

DDoS attacks are launched against websites or web services with the aim of disrupting them to the extent that they are taken offline. Attackers direct the traffic from a botnet army of hundreds of thousands of PCs, servers and other internet-connected devices they've gained control of via malware towards the target, with the aim of overwhelming it.

An attack can last for just seconds, or hours or days and prevent legitimate users from accessing the online service for that time.

And while DDoS attacks have been a nuisance for years, the prospect of corporate, e-commerce, healthcare, educational and other services being disrupted at a time when the ongoing global pandemic means more people are reliant on online services than ever could create huge problems.

KPMG: Consumers Vote to Ditch Breached Firms

Most consumers would take their business elsewhere if they discovered an organisation had suffered a major cyber-attack or data breach, according to new data from KPMG.

The global consulting firm polled over 2000 Canadians in September to better understand the impact of security incidents and the risks for online firms that fail to adequately protect customer data.

As many as 90% of respondents said they would feel wary about sharing personal or financial information with a company that had suffered such an incident, and over two-thirds (67%) are more worried than ever about their data being breached.

Why this matters:

The findings come at a time when consumers are spending more of their lives, and sharing more of their data, online.

Over half (54%) of respondents said they are shopping more online than they used to pre-COVID, rising to 64% for the 18-44 age group. The same number (54%) said they had received a lot more suspicious emails in the first half of 2020, and even more (84%) claimed they were being “extra careful” when shopping online for fear of their data being stolen.

Phishing (38%) and spear-phishing (13%) were revealed as the most common attacks likely to face Canadians, as they are consumers in other Western countries. Unfortunately for brands, they are likely to get the blame for successful attacks on consumers even though it is the email recipients themselves who make the mistake of clicking through.

InterPlanetary Storm Botnet Infects 13K Mac, Android Devices

A new variant of the InterPlanetary Storm malware has been discovered, which comes with fresh detection-evasion tactics and now targets Mac and Android devices (in addition to Windows and Linux, which were targeted by previous variants of the malware).

Researchers say the malware is building a botnet with a current estimated 13,500 infected machines across 84 countries worldwide – and that number continues to grow. Half of the infected machines are in Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan. Other infected systems are in Russia, Brazil, the U.S., Sweden and China.

Why this matters:

While the botnet that this malware is building does not have clear functionality yet, it gives the campaign operators a backdoor into the infected devices so they can later be used for cryptomining, DDoS, or other large-scale attacks.

Android Spyware Variant Snoops on WhatsApp, Telegram Messages

Researchers say they have uncovered a new Android spyware variant with an updated command-and-control communication strategy and extended surveillance capabilities that snoops on social media apps WhatsApp and Telegram.

The malware, Android/SpyC32.A, is currently being used in active campaigns targeting victims in the Middle East. It is a new variant of an existing malware operated by threat group APT-C-23 (also known as Two-Tailed Scorpion and Desert Scorpion). APT-C-23 is known to utilize both Windows and Android components, and has previously targeted victims in the Middle East with apps in order to compromise Android smartphones.

Why this matters:

APT groups are increasing activity and they are continually, enhancing their toolsets and running new operations. This the group’s newest spyware version features several improvements making it more dangerous to victims. Whilst these attacks are targeting victims in the Middle East different groups will be using similar tactics against different targets in different locations.

GFSC new Cyber Rules and Guidance out for consultation

The GFSC have put the Cyber Security Rules and Guidance Consultation Paper up on their website and consultation hub.

Why this matters:

The new rules and accompanying guidance came out of the 18 month thematic review which ended last year, which found that regulated financial service firms within the Bailiwick of Guernsey were not taking risks from cyber threats seriously enough and were lacking in appropriate protections and controls. These new rules seek to rectify this but many firms on the Island are going to have to do work to become compliant, especially around their ability to monitor for and detect unusual activity that could be indicative of a actual or attempted intrusion or breach.

Leaked FinCEN files expose poor data security

Leaked documents, dubbed the “FinCEN Files,” describe global money laundering of $2 trillion processed by many of the world’s biggest banks between 2000 and 2017. The reveal illuminates the struggle for the financial industry and government to provide ironclad data protection.

“This sensational and unprecedented leak clearly demonstrates a wide spectrum of data protection weaknesses in the governmental sector, affecting even the most developed Western countries,” Ilia Kolochenko, founder and CEO of  ImmuniWeb, said of the files.

“From a cybersecurity standpoint, we may expect a growing lack of trust to governmental agencies, which on one side have quasi-unlimited access to the most sensitive data of the largest organisations, while cannot duly safeguard this data on the other side,” he said.

The latest disclosure exposing apparently insufficient attempts by the public and private sectors to curb corruption came to light in a BuzzFeed News report which detailed more than 2,500 reported cases, including 2,100 Suspicious Activity Reports (SAR) filed by financial institutions with the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, HSBC and Standard Chartered are among the financial institutions cited in the leaked files as processing dirty money around the world. The documents may have come from a whistleblower or insider at FinCEN. The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), which represents 108 news organizations in 88 countries, is conducting a probe of the matter.

Why this matters:

Other similar investigative reports on similar wrongdoing focused single financial, tax or legal institutions, such as the 2017 Panama Papers emanating from clients of the law firm Mossack Fonseca. But the FinCEN docs reveal that a wide array of people from oligarchs and corrupt politicians to drug dealers and organised crime throughout the world know how to circumvent the system’s supposed checks and balances.

Microsoft says it detected active attacks leveraging Zerologon vulnerability

Hackers are actively exploiting the Zerologon vulnerability in real-world attacks, Microsoft's security intelligence team said this week.

The attacks were expected to happen, according to security industry experts.

Multiple versions of weaponized proof-of-concept exploit code have been published online in freely downloadable form since details about the Zerologon vulnerability were revealed a week ago.

The first proof-of-concept exploit was published hours after the explanatory blog post, confirming initial analysis that the Zerologon bug is easy to exploit, even by low-skilled threat actors.

Why this matters:

Put simply the Zerologon bug is a vulnerability in Netlogon, the protocol used by Windows systems to authenticate against a Windows Server running as a domain controller. Exploiting the Zerologon bug can allow hackers to take over the domain controller, and inherently a company's internal network.

Zerologon was described by many as the most dangerous bug revealed this year. US federal agencies were given three days to patch domain controllers or disconnect them from federal networks.

As several security experts have recommended since Microsoft revealed the attacks, companies that have their domain controller exposed on the internet should take systems offline to patch them.

These internet-reachable servers are particularly vulnerable as attacks can be mounted directly, without the hacker first needing a foothold on internal systems.

Doppelpaymer ransomware crew fingered for attack on German hospital that caused death of a patient

The Doppelpaymer ransomware gang were behind the cyber-attack on a German hospital that led to one patient's death, according to local sources.

A German newspaper carried a report that Doppelpaymer's eponymous ransomware had been introduced to the University Hospital Düsseldorf's network through a vulnerable Citrix product.

That ransomware infection, activated last week, is said by local prosecutors to have led to the death of one patient who the hospital was unable to treat on arrival. She died in an ambulance while being transported to another medical facility with functioning systems.

Why this matters:

According to a report handed to the provincial government of North Rhine-Westphalia and seen by the German Press Association (DPA), the ransomware's loader had been lurking on the hospital's network since December 2019, the same month a patch was issued by Citrix for CVE-2019-19781 – the same vuln exploited to hit the hospital.

Whilst this is the first time a loss of life has been directly attributed to ransomware the threats are increasing all the time.

Vulnerabilities must be patched as soon as possible to stop known vulnerabilities from being used in attacks.

“LokiBot,” the malware that steals your most sensitive data, is on the rise

Agencies in the US have reported seeing a big uptick in infections coming from LokiBot, an open source DIY malware package for Windows that’s openly sold or traded for free in underground forums. It steals passwords and cryptocurrency wallets, and it can also download and install new malware.

The increase was measured by an automated intrusion-detection system for collecting, correlating, analysing, and sharing computer security information.

US cyber agency CISA observed a notable increase in the use of LokiBot malware by malicious cyber actors since July 2020 according to an alert issued this week.

Why this matters:

While not quite as prevalent or noxious as the Emotet malware, LokiBot remains a serious and widespread menace. The infostealer spreads through a variety of methods, including malicious email attachments, exploitation of software vulnerabilities, and trojans sneaked into pirated or free apps. Its simple interface and reliable codebase make it attractive to a wide range of crooks, including those who are new to cybercrime and have few technical skills.

Ransomware is evolving, but the key to preventing attacks remains the same

Ransomware attacks are getting more aggressive according to a senior figure at Europe's law enforcement agency, but there are simple steps which organisations can follow to protect themselves – and their employees – from falling victim to attacks.

"Ransomware is one of the main threats," said the head of operations at Europol's European Cybercrime Centre (EC3). Europol supports the 27 EU member states in their fight against terrorism, cybercrime and other serious and organised forms of crime.

"Criminals behind ransomware attacks are adapting their attack vectors, they're more aggressive than in the past – they're not only encrypting the files, they're also exfiltrating data and making it available," he explained. "From a law enforcement perspective, we have been monitoring this evolution."

Why this matters:

This year has seen a rise in ransomware attacks where cyber criminals aren't just encrypting the networks of victims and demanding six-figure bitcoin payment to return the files, but they're also threatening to publish sensitive corporate information and other stolen data if the victim doesn't pay the ransom.

A look at the top threats inside malicious emails

Web-phishing targeting various online services almost doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic: it accounted for 46 percent of the total number of fake web pages, Group-IB reveals.

Ransomware, the headliner of the previous half-year, walked off stage: only 1 percent of emails analysed contained this kind of malware. Every third email, meanwhile, contained spyware, which is used by threat actors to steal payment data or other sensitive info to then put it on sale in the darknet or blackmail its owner.

Downloaders, intended for the installation of additional malware, and backdoors, granting cybercriminals remote access to victims’ computers, also made it to top-3. They are followed by banking Trojans, whose share in the total amount of malicious attachments showed growth for the first time in a while.

According to the data, in H1 2020 detected malicious emails were:

  • 43 percent of the malicious mails had attachments with spyware or links leading to their downloading

  • 17 percent contained downloaders

  • 16 percent had backdoors

  • 15 percent had banking trojans

  • Ransomware, which in the second half of 2019 hid in every second malicious email, almost disappeared from the mailboxes in the first six months of this year with a share of less than 1 percent.

Why this matters:

These findings confirm adversaries’ growing interest in Big Game Hunting. Ransomware operators have switched from attacks en masse on individuals to corporate networks. Thus, when attacking large companies, instead of infecting the computer of a separate individual immediately after the compromise, attackers use the infected machine to move laterally in the network, escalate the privileges in the system and distribute ransomware on as many hosts as possible.

Credential Stuffing: the Culprit of Recent Attacks

A year ago, researchers found that 2.2 billion leaked records, known as Collection 1-5, were being passed around by hackers. This ‘mega leak’ included 1.2 billion unique email addresses and password combinations, 773 million unique email addresses and 21 million plaintext passwords. With this treasure trove, hackers can simply test email and password combinations on different sites, hoping that a user has reused one. This popular technique is known as credential stuffing and is the culprit of many recent data breaches.

There are only a few months left of 2020 but this year has seen its fair share of major data breaches including:

  • Marriott International experienced another mega breach, when it was still recovering from the 2018 data breach that exposed approximately 339 million customer records

  • Zoom became a new favourite for hackers due to the remote working mandated in many parts of the world - in early April  Zoom fell victim to a credential stuffing attack, which resulted in 500,000 of Zoom’s usernames and passwords being exposed on the Dark Web.

  • GoDaddy, the world’s largest domain registrar confirmed in April that credentials of 28,000 of its customer web hosting accounts were compromised in a security incident back in October 2019.

  • Nintendo - in March, users reported unauthorised logins to their accounts and charges for digital items without their permission. In June Nintendo advised that approximately 300,000 accounts were affected by the breach, resulting in the compromise of personal identifiable information such as email address, date of birth, country and gender.

Why this matters:

It has become evident that many of the recent data breaches were the result of credential stuffing attacks leveraging compromised passwords or passphrases. Credential stuffing attacks are automated hacks where stolen usernames and password combinations are thrown at the login process of various websites in an effort to break in. With billions of compromised credentials already circulating the Dark Web, credential stuffing attacks can be carried out with relative ease and with a 1-3% success rate.

When the account of an employee is compromised, hackers can gain access to sensitive data that organisation has collected, and sell it on the Dark Web. The stolen data, often including login credentials, can then be used to infiltrate other organisations’ systems which creates a never-ending cycle.

This is why the LinkedIn breach was blamed for several secondary compromises due to users recycling their exposed LinkedIn passwords on other sites.

Cyber losses are increasing in frequency and severity

Research by a cyber insurance provider in North America shows cyber attacks have increased in number and severity since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The changes that organisations implemented to facilitate remote work have given cyber criminals new opportunities to launch campaigns exploiting mass uncertainty and fear.

The severity of ransomware attacks has increased since the beginning of COVID-19, with researchers having observed a 47% increase on top of a 100% increase in Q1 2020.

Researchers also found that newer strains of ransomware have been particularly malicious, with costly ransom demands and criminal actors threatening to expose an organisation’s data if they don’t pay. They report that the average demand from attackers using the Maze variety of ransomware is approximately six times larger than the overall average.

Researchers also reported a 35% increase in funds transfer fraud and social engineering claims filed by their policyholders since the pandemic began. Reported losses from these types of attack have ranged from the low thousands to well above $1 million per event.

Additionally, COVID-19 has resulted in a notable surge of business email compromise. The insurer observed a 67% increase in the number of email attacks during the pandemic.

Why this matters:

The report refers to North America but the findings are applicable to us all. They indicate that the most frequent types of losses incurred by victims were from ransomware (41%), funds transfer loss (27%), and business email compromise incidents (19%) — accounting for 87% of reported incidents and 84% of the insurer’s claim pay-outs in the first half of 2020.

Clearly with the landscape getting worse, firms more likely to fall victim, and with losses increasing all the time, firms should ensure they are taking these threats seriously.

Hackers have revived a decade-old Microsoft Office exploit - and they’re having a field day

Hackers have ramped up attempts to abuse a decade-old Microsoft Office flaw with the help of creative new email scams, new research has found.

According to analysis commissioned by NordVPN, attempts to exploit the vulnerability (CVE-2017-11882) rose by 400% in the second quarter of the year - with further growth expected.

Why this matters:

If exploited successfully, the memory corruption bug could allow attackers to execute code on the target device remotely. This is especially problematic if the affected user’s account has administrative privileges, in which case the hacker could seize control of the system.

Cerberus banking Trojan source code released for free to cyber attackers

The source code of the Cerberus banking Trojan has been released as free malware on underground hacking forums following a failed auction.

The leaked code, distributed under the name Cerberus v2, presents an increased threat for smartphone users and the banking sector at large. 

Why this matters:

Cerberus is a mobile banking Trojan designed for the Google Android operating system. In circulation since at least July 2019, the Remote Access Trojan (RAT) is able to conduct covert surveillance, intercept communication, tamper with device functionality, and steal data including banking credentials by creating overlays on existing banking, retail, and social networking apps.

The malware is able to read text messages that may contain one-time passcodes (OTP) and two-factor authentication (2FA) codes, thereby bypassing typical 2FA account protections. OTPs generated through Google Authenticator may also be stolen.

Critical Bluetooth security vulnerability could affect billions of devices worldwide

A new security flaw in the Bluetooth software stack discovered over the summer has the potential to affect billions of smartphones, laptops and IoT devices using the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocol.

The new vulnerability has been given the name BLESA (Bluetooth Low Energy Spoofing Attack) by the team of seven academic researchers at Purdue University who first discovered it.

Unlike the recently discovered BLURtooth vulnerability that deals with how Bluetooth devices pair with one another, BLESA was found in the reconnection process. Reconnections occur when two BLE devices move out of range and then move back into range. Normally BLE devices check the cryptographic keys negotiated during the pairing process when reconnecting.

The research team found that the official BLE specification did not contain strong-enough language to describe the reconnection process properly leading to two systemic issues making their way into BLE software implementations.

The first deals with the fact that authentication during device reconnection is optional as opposed to mandatory while the second relates to how authentication can potentially be circumvented if a user's BLE device fails to force another device to authenticate the cryptographic keys sent while reconnecting.

Why this matters:

Billions of devices could be vulnerable to these BLESA attacks where a nearby attacker bypasses reconnection verification and sends spoofed data to a BLE device with incorrect information. This can lead both humans and automated processes to make incorrect decisions when it comes to allowing two devices to reconnect with one another.

Coffee machines, cuddly toys and cars: The Internet of Things devices that could put you at risk from hackers

Connected teddy bears, connected coffee machines and connected cars are just some of the unusual Internet of Things (IoT) devices being insecurely connected to corporate networks that could leave whole organisations open to cyber attacks.

A research paper by Palo Alto Networks details the surge in IoT devices being connected to corporate networks and their wide variety.

Some of the most common irregular devices being connected to organisations' networks include connected vehicles, connected toys and connected medical devices, with connected sports equipment such as fitness trackers, gaming devices and connected cars also being deployed.

These devices are being connected because they can often help people through the working day or help manage aspects of their personal life, but they're also creating additional problems for the corporate network.

Why this matters:

In many cases, these 'shadow IoT' devices are being added to the network without the knowledge of the security team.

This could potentially leave the corporate network vulnerable because not only do some IoT devices have poor security that means they can easily be discovered and exploited, but some workplaces still have flat networks and if a device is compromised then an attacker can move from the IoT product to another system.

DDoS Attacks Skyrocket as Pandemic Bites

More people being online during lockdowns and more people working from home has proven to be lucrative for DDoS type attacks.

The first half of 2020 saw a significant uptick in the number of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks compared to the same period last year — a phenomenon that appears to be directly correlated to the global coronavirus pandemic.

One firm’s Security Operations Centre (SOC) saw a 151 percent increase in DDoS activity in the period, including one of the largest and longest attacks they had has ever mitigated – that attack came in at 1.17 terabits-per-second (Tbps), and lasted five days and 18 hours.

These figures are representative of the growing number, volume and intensity of network-type cyber attacks as organizations shifted to remote operations and workers’ reliance on the internet increased.

Why this matters:

DDoS attacks are getting bigger, with a “noticeable spike” in volume: The number of attacks sized 100Gbps and above grew a whopping 275 percent. Emblematic of this is a 2.3Tbps attack targeting an Amazon Web Services client in February – the largest volumetric DDoS attack on record. And the aforementioned 1.17Tbps attack was 192 percent bigger than the largest attack mitigated during the first half of 2019.

US charges two Russians for stealing $16.8m via cryptocurrency phishing sites

The US Department of Justice has filed charges this week against two Russian nationals for orchestrating a multi-year phishing operation against the users of three cryptocurrency exchanges.

The two suspects stand accused of creating website clones for the Poloniex, Binance, and Gemini cryptocurrency exchanges, luring users on these fake sites, and collecting their account credentials. These phishing operations began around June 2017.

US officials said the Russian duo — made up of Danil Potekhin (aka cronuswar) and Dmitrii Karasavidi; residents of Voronezh and Moscow, respectively — used the stolen credentials to access victim accounts and steal their Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) crypto-assets.

Why this matters:

In total, US officials estimated the victims in the hundreds. Court documents cite 313 defrauded Poloniex users, 142 Binance victims, and 42 users at Gemini. Losses were estimated at $16,876,000.

Whilst bitcoin has waned in popularity after its highs a few years back there is still value in holdings held in different exchanges and these holdings remain popular targets for attackers.

US charges two Iranian hackers for years-long cyber-espionage, cybercrime spree

The US has also filed charges against and is seeking the arrest of two Iranian nationals believed to have carried out cyber-intrusions at the behest of the Iranian government and for their own personal financial gain.

In an indictment unsealed this week, prosecutors accused Hooman Heidarian and Mehdi Farhadi, both from Hamedan, Iran, of launching cyber-attacks against a wide range of targets since at least 2013.

Past victims included several US and foreign universities, a Washington think tank, a defense contractor, an aerospace company, a foreign policy organization, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), non-profits, and foreign government and other entities the defendants identified as rivals or adversaries to Iran, with most targets located in the US, Israel, and Saudi Arabia.

US officials said Heidarian and Farhadi focused on gaining access to their victims' accounts, computers, and internal networks, from where they stole confidential data and communications pertaining to topics such as national security, foreign policy, nuclear energy, and aerospace.

Why this matters:

Financial data and personally identifiable information wasn't off-limits, and the two also stole intellectual property, such as unpublished scientific research.

In addition, the two also targeted and stole personal information and communications of Iranian dissidents, human rights activists, and opposition leaders, according to George M. Crouch Jr., Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Newark Division.

Prosecutors believe that some of the stolen data was handed over to Iranian government intelligence officials, but that other information was also sold on black markets for the hackers' personal gains.

Alert issued to UK universities and colleges about spike in cyber attacks

British universities and colleges have been warned about a spike in ransomware attacks targeting the education sector by the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a part of GCHQ.

Academic institutions are being urged to follow NCSC guidance following a sharp increase in attacks which have left some teachers fearing they won't be able to accept students when term begins.

Last week staff at Newcastle University warned Sky News they had "no idea how we are going to welcome students in three weeks' time" following one such ransomware attack, which has impacted IT services across the whole university.

Similar attacks in which criminal hackers infiltrated computer networks and stole data before encrypting the machines and demanding a ransom payment to unlock them again, have hit Northumbria University, Bolton Sixth Form College, Leeds City College and others in August alone.

Speaking to Sky News, NCSC's director of operations Paul Chichester said the agency had seen an increase in the "utterly reprehensible" attacks over the past 18 months and was concerned they would disrupt young people's education.

Why this matters:

There are more than a dozen criminal groups which are currently earning millions by encrypting their victim's computer networks and then leaking stolen documents online to pressure the victims into paying up.

Ransomware accounted for 41% of all cyber insurance claims in H1 2020

Ransomware incidents have accounted for 41% of cyber insurance claims filed in the first half of 2020, according to a report published today by one of the largest providers of cyber insurance services in North America.

The high number of claims comes to confirm previous reports from multiple cyber-security firms that ransomware is one of today's most prevalent and destructive threats.

Ransomware doesn't discriminate by industry. An increase in ransom attacks has been seen across almost every industry.

In the first half of 2020 alone, they observed a 260% increase in the frequency of ransomware attacks amongst their policyholders, with the average ransom demand increasing 47%.

Among the most aggressive gangs, the cyber insurer listed Maze and DoppelPaymer, which have recently begun exfiltrating data from hacked networks, and threatening to release data on specialized leak sites, as part of double extortion schemes.

Why this matters:

Ransomware remains, and is likely to remain, by far one of the biggest menaces on the web, it is indiscriminate, anyone can be affected, it can be business destroying, and it is getting worse all the time.

Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday Packed with Critical RCE Bugs

Microsoft has released patches for 129 security bugs in its September Patch Tuesday update. These include 23 critical flaws, 105 that are important in severity and one moderate bug. Fortunately, none are publicly known or under active exploitation, Microsoft said.

The most severe issue in the bunch is CVE-2020-16875, according to researchers. This is a memory-corruption problem in Microsoft Exchange that allows remote code-execution (RCE) just by sending an email to a target. Running arbitrary code could grant attackers the access they need to create new accounts, access, modify or remove data, and install programs.

Why this matters:

Many organisations are struggling to keep up with the volume of updates and keeping on top of them, or knowing which to prioritise, is critical for firms. At a time while many organisations continue to struggle to support the ongoing distribution of remote workers, Microsoft continues to pile on the updates and finding an efficient method for rolling out these patches has become even more imperative as companies begin to abandon the idea of a short-term fix and shift operations to embrace remote work as part of a lasting, long-term progression of how organisations operate moving forward.

Firms are beginning to realise the negative outcomes of the lenient security measures put in place to quickly adapt to a decentralised workforce and it’s become more important than ever to establish patching policies that can securely support remote endpoints for the foreseeable future.

60 percent of emails in May and June were fraudulent

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen a spike in scams, phishing and malware across all platforms and attack vectors. The latest mid-year threat landscape report from Bitdefender shows that in May and June, an average of 60 percent of all received emails were fraudulent.

In addition there’s been a five-fold increase in the number of coronavirus-themed attacks and a 46 percent increase in attacks aimed at home IoT devices.

IoT malware has become versatile, robust, and is constantly updated. IrcFlu, Dark_Nexus7 and InterPLanetary Storm are some of the examples malware that gained in popularity during the first half of 2020.

Mobile malware has been quick to capitalise too, with malware developers rushing to weaponise popular applications, such as the Zoom video conferencing application, used by employees now working from home. Packing RAT (Remote Access Trojan) capabilities, or bundling them with ransomware, banking malware, or even highly aggressive adware, Android malware developers were also fully exploiting the pandemic wave.

Why this matters:

As we keep saying malicious actors never let a good crisis or tragedy go to waste and will exploit whatever is going on in the world or anything there is a collective interest in to real in unsuspecting victims.

Good awareness and education are key in keeping your employees and users safe and ensuring users at all levels, including board members – who present a significant risk, are up to date with latest tactics and threats.

Email in particular will remain primary vector for attack and this is unlikely to change any time soon.

Businesses [should] Fear Insider-Enabled Data Breaches

Businesses fear suffering a data breach and expect it to be caused by an insider or internal error.

A survey of 500 IT professionals found that 94% of respondents have experienced a data breach, and 79% were worried their organisation could be next.

The fear associated with breaches stems from the security culture within the organisation, along with the security reporting structure.

Having security teams in close dialogue with executive leadership, supporting the leadership to make informed risk-based decisions and driving the business strategy, including the technologies used, reduces this fear significantly.

Secondly, not understanding information security, its components and principles drives fear and anxiety of the unknown, so having security education training, and developing awareness and consciousness of threats, will enable and empower the entire organisation to act with a ‘security first’ mindset.

Finally, recognising the importance of access control to protect systems and data is a foundational level control that organisations can apply to reduce the risk of a data breach. Hand in hand with this is partnering with trusted identity and access control platform providers who can provide enterprises with that security expertise and industry leadership.

Why this matters:

In terms of what is causing the breaches, 40% of respondents to the survey said accidental employee incidents were to blame, compared to 21% who said it is external attackers. Asked if this is a case of businesses not having a handle on what leaves their organisations (either intentionally or accidentally), insiders already have access and can leave with data invisibly, which might turn up somewhere embarrassing later.

4 top vulnerabilities ransomware attackers exploited in 2020

As more employees work from home, attackers have more endpoints to target. These unpatched vulnerabilities in remote access tools and Windows makes their job easier.

The biggest security trend for 2020 has been the increase of COVID-19-related phishing and other attacks targeting remote workers. New York City, for example, has gone from having to protect 80,000 endpoints to around 750,000 endpoints in its threat management since work-from-home edicts took place.

As noted in a recent Check Point Software Technologies mid-year review, “The first impact of the pandemic was the proliferation of malware attacks that used social engineering techniques with COVID-19 thematic lures for the delivery stage.”  Domain names were set up and parked with names relating to the pandemic. As workers started to use videoconferencing platforms, attacks moved to attacking Zoom, Teams and other videoconferencing platforms.

One disturbing trend is that 80% of the observed attacks in the first half of 2020 used vulnerabilities reported and registered in 2017 and earlier, according to the Check Point report, and more than 20% of the attacks used vulnerabilities that are at least seven years old. This showcases that we have a problem in keeping our software up to date.

Why this matters:

Ransomware remains a big threat 2020 and expanding attack surfaces with staff working from home is making the situation worse. Attackers use vulnerabilities in tools used for remote access into Windows networks.

APT Groups Increasingly Targeting Linux-Based Devices

APT groups are increasingly executing targeted attacks against Linux-based devices as well as developing more Linux-focused tools, according to an investigation by Kaspersky.

This is as a result of a growing number of organisations’ selecting Linux ahead of Windows to run their strategically important servers and systems, and the perception that the Linux operating system is safer and less likely to be targeted by malware as it is less popular.

However, threat-actors have been observed to adapt their tactics to take advantage of this trend, and Kaspersky noted that “over a dozen APT actors have been observed to use Linux malware or some Linux-based modules” during the past eight years.

These include notorious groups such as Turla, Lazarus, Barium, Sofacy, the Lamberts and Equation. Kaspersky highlighted the example of Russian speaking APT group Turla using Linux backdoors as part of its changing toolset in recent years.

Why this matters:

Attacks that target Linux-based systems are still fewer in number than attacks on Windows based systems, but there is still malware designed to target them, including webshells, backdoors, rootkits and even custom-made exploits.

Major Chilean bank shuts down all branches following ransomware attack

Banco Estado, the only public bank in Chile and one of the three largest in the country, had to shut down its nationwide operations on Monday due to a cyberattack that turned out to be a ransomware launched by REvil.

According to a public statement, the branches will remain closed for at least one day, but clarified that customers’ funds have not been affected by the incident.

Sources close to the investigation reported that the REvil ransomware gang is behind the attack. It reportedly originated from an Office document infected with the malware that an employee received and proceeded to open.

The incident was reported to the Chilean authorities, who issued a cyber-security alert that warned about a massive ransomware campaign targeting the private sector in the country.

Why this matters:

As above ransomware is not going away and is getting worse all the time. Too many users don’t realise that simply opening a document or clicking on a link in an email could bring down their entire organisations. Staff and users need to be educated about the role they play in securing their organisations.

Vulnerabilities discovered in PAN-OS, which powers Palo Alto Networks’ firewalls

Palo Alto Networks this week remediated vulnerabilities in PAN-OS (operating systems version 8.1 or later) which command injection, cross site scripting and the ability to upload unauhtoised files to a directory which might lead to denial of service.

Why this matters:

Attackers can use these vulnerabilities to gain access to sensitive data or develop the attack to gain access to the internal segments of the network of a company that uses vulnerable protection tools.

Any security fixes for known vulnerabilities across any different product, software or firmware should be tested and applied as soon as possible, so those vulnerabilities cannot be used against you or your organisation.

Russia, China and Iran hackers target Trump and Biden, Microsoft says

Hackers with ties to Russia, China and Iran are attempting to snoop on people and groups involved with the US 2020 presidential election, Microsoft says.

The Russian hackers who breached the 2016 Democratic campaign are again involved, said the US tech firm.

Microsoft said it was "clear that foreign activity groups have stepped up their efforts" targeting the election.

Both President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden's campaigns are in the cyber-raiders' sights.

Russian hackers from the Strontium group have targeted more than 200 organisations, many of which are linked to US political parties - both Republicans and Democrats, Microsoft said in a statement.

Why this matters:

The same attackers have also targeted British political parties, said Microsoft, without specifying which ones. Any meddling in politics by foreign states is a clear threat to the democratic process and shows that unfriendly states will interfere to further their own agendas.

TikTok battles to remove video of livestreamed suicide

TikTok is battling to remove a graphic video of a livestreamed suicide, after the footage was uploaded to the service on Sunday night from Facebook, where it was initially broadcast.

Although the footage was rapidly taken down from TikTok, users spent much of Monday re-uploading it, initially unchanged, but later incorporated into so-called bait-and-switch videos, which are designed to shock and upset unsuspecting users.

One such video, for instance, begins with a conventional video of an influencer talking to camera, before cutting without warning to the graphic footage.

Why this matters:

Parents, especially of younger children, may think that certain sites and social media channels are safe for children and the content is suitable vetted and controlled, but as this illustrates that is often not the case and caution should be exercised in allow young children unfettered access to social media.

Lessons from Charities and Upcoming Charities Workshop this Thursday

Welcome to this week's Black Arrow Cyber Tip Tuesday.

This week, Black Arrow will host a workshop on cyber security for charities. This is part of our pro-bono work with charities and the Guernsey Community Foundation.

As research, we have worked with a few charities to look at their main information and cyber security risks, and the solutions that they can implement either free of charge or at low cost.

We have seen that a charity is effectively a small business, where the team uses information that needs to be safeguarded. But a charity’s information can be very confidential where it relates to the health or private lives of its members.

The charity’s team, including employees and volunteers, might not be aware of information security or be at ease using technology. For example, employees and volunteers often receive sensitive information at home using their own computer, and then download it onto that computer and print it out to take with them when visiting the member.

There is sometimes no control over what happens to that sensitive printed document and how it is stored or disposed of.

Equally, the charity’s employees and volunteers need to be alert to the risks of using online technology and the tactics of criminals who try to get access to their computer and information.

CEOs could soon be personally liable for cyberattacks

Within four years, the majority of CEOs will be held personally responsible for cyberattacks that lead to injury and other physical damage.

This is according to a new report from Gartner, which asserts that liability for cyber-physical security incidents will “pierce the corporate veil to personal liability” for 75 percent of CEOs by 2024.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are described as digital systems that interact with the physical world, such as IoT devices or operational technologies (OT).

“Regulators and governments will react promptly to an increase in serious incidents resulting from failure to secure CPSs, drastically increasing rules and regulations governing them,” said Katell Thielemann, Research Vice President at Gartner.

“In the US, the FBI, NSA and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have already increased the frequency and details provided around threats to critical infrastructure-related systems, most of which are owned by private industry. Soon, CEOs won’t be able to plead ignorance or retreat behind insurance policies.”

Why this matters:

CPS attacks with fatalities will incur costs to businesses of more than $50 billion within the next three years, Gartner predicts. Irrespective of the value of human life, businesses are looking at major costs in terms of compensation, litigation, insurance, regulatory fines and reputation loss.

Technology leaders need to help CEOs understand the risks that CPSs represent and the need to dedicate focus and budget to securing them. The more connected CPSs are, the higher the likelihood of an incident occurring.

Global DDoS Extorters Demand Ransom from Firms

Security experts are warning of a new global DDoS-related extortion campaign targeting businesses operating in the e-commerce, finance and travel sectors.

Researchers said they had been tracking the threat actors since mid-August, with victims in North America, APAC and EMEA. Emails are typically delivered claiming to come from state-sponsored groups such as Fancy Bear and Lazarus Group, as well as the  “Armada Collective.”

The latter group has been linked to similar extortion emails sent in previous years.

The ransom emails threaten to launch DDoS attacks against the recipient organization of over 2Tbps, if payment of anywhere between 10 and 20BTC ($113,000-226,000) is not made. They also threaten to increase the ransom by 10BTC for each deadline missed.

Also included in the messages are the Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) or IP addresses of servers or services that the group says it will target if their demands are not met.

Why this matters:

DDoS attacks take businesses legitimate online operations offline by flooding them with traffic such that legitimate traffic can’t get through, or they are so swamped with traffic that services can’t cope. Depending on the type of business and how reliant they are on their online presence these types of attacks could prevent firms from operating entirely.

Hackers are exploiting a critical flaw affecting >350,000 WordPress sites

Hackers are actively exploiting a vulnerability that allows them to execute commands and malicious scripts on Websites running File Manager, a WordPress plugin with more than 700,000 active installations, researchers said on Tuesday. Word of the attacks came a few hours after the security flaw was patched.

Why this matters:

Attackers are using the exploit to upload files hidden in an image, which from there provides a convenient interface that allows them to run commands in the directory where the File Manager plugin resides. Hackers may be able to exact more damage by uploading scripts that can carry out actions on other parts of a vulnerable site.

Phishing attacks surge during the pandemic

In yet another example of cyber criminals exploiting world events, the frequency of phishing threats has risen considerably since the start of the pandemic, with companies experiencing an average of 1,185 attacks every month.

New research reveals that more than half (53 percent) of over 300 IT professionals surveyed by Cyber security Insiders say they had witnessed an increase in phishing activity since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why this matters:

The report also shows that 38 percent of respondents report that a co-worker has fallen victim to an attack within the last year. As a result, 15 percent of organizations are now left spending anywhere from one to four days remediating malicious attacks during what is already a difficult time for many.

Average Business Email Compromise (BEC) attempts are now $80k, but one group is aiming for $1.27m per attack

BEC scammer groups are growing more brazen. The average sum that a BEC group will try to steal from a targeted company is now around $80,000 per attack, according to an industry report published on Monday.

The number is up from $54,000, the average sum that BEC groups tried to obtain from victims in Q1 2020, as reported by the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG), an industry coalition made up of more than 2,200 organizations from the cyber-security industry, government, law enforcement, and NGOs sector.

One of the largest industry group of its kind, the APWG has been releasing quarterly reports on the state of phishing operations since 2004.

Why this matters:

Most of these reports have usually centred on email phishing attacks that focus on stealing login credentials and distributing malware. However, since the mid-2010s, BEC fraud has been slowly taking more and more space in APWG's reports, as BEC fraud has become today's top cybercrime trend.

BEC, or Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams, usually begin with phishing, with an email sent to a company's employee. The end goal is to dupe the employee into paying fake invoices or transferring funds to an account controlled by the attackers.

Iran based Pioneer Kitten APT Sells Corporate Network Access

An APT (Advanced Persistent Threat) group known as Pioneer Kitten, linked to Iran, has been spotted selling corporate-network credentials on hacker forums.

Pioneer Kitten is a hacker group that specialises in infiltrating corporate networks using open-source tools to compromise remote external services. Researchers observed an actor associated with the group advertising access to compromised networks on an underground forum in July, according to a blog post earlier this week.

Pioneer Kitten’s work is related to other groups either sponsored or run by the Iranian government, which were previously seen hacking VPNs and planting backdoors in companies around the world.

Why this matters:

The credentials would let other cybercriminal groups and APTs perform cyberespionage and other nefarious cyber-activity. It is also noteworthy to see a group operating on behalf of or closed with a Nation State, in this case Iran, appearing to potential attempt to diversify their revenue streams through sales of stolen credentials.

Nearly A Million Printers At Risk Of Attack, Thousands Hacked To Prove It

Roughly 28,000 printers recently gave their owners an unexpected lesson in cybersecurity. Seemingly unprompted, the printers whirred to life and produced a 5-step guide to keeping hackers at bay.

“This printer has been hacked,” the message began ominously. Fortunately for the “victims” it was a group of ethical hackers behind the attack. A team of researchers from CyberNews was out to remind the public about the potential peril of connected devices.

To get the ball rolling, the team scoured the globe for printers that were vulnerable. They found more than 800,000 in total using a search engine called Shodan.

Shodan is a tool that’s leaned on by both security researchers and cyber criminals. In the past it’s been used to identify thousands of at-risk surveillance cameras, security alarm systems and hundreds of wind turbines and solar devices.

Why this matters:

Vulnerable devices within your networks can present a vulnerability to other devices on your network too and can be an easy point of entry for attackers.

Many firms do a good job of updating desktops and laptops when operating system updates come out, but too many firms neglect networking devices such as routers, modems and switches, and other devices on their networks such as printers.

WhatsApp reveals six previously undisclosed vulnerabilities on new security site

Facebook -owned WhatsApp has revealed six previously undisclosed vulnerabilities, which the company has now fixed. The vulnerabilities are being reported on a dedicated security advisory website that will serve as the new resource providing a comprehensive list of WhatsApp security updates and associated Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE).

WhatsApp said five of the six vulnerabilities were fixed in the same day, while the remaining bug took a couple of days to remediate. Although some of the bugs could have been remotely triggered, the company said it found no evidence of hackers actively exploiting the vulnerabilities.

Why this matters:

WhatsApp is one of the world’s most popular apps, with more than two billion users around the world. But it’s also a persistent target for hackers, who try to find and exploit vulnerabilities in the platform. As with all software updates should be applied as soon as possible to ensure that fixes that remediate known vulnerabilities are fixed.

Attackers are trying to exploit a high-severity zero day in Cisco gear

Telecoms and data-centre operators take note: attackers are actively trying to exploit a high-severity zero day vulnerability in Cisco networking devices, the company warned over the weekend.

The security flaw resides in Cisco’s iOS XR Software, an operating system for carrier-grade routers and other networking devices used by telecommunications and data-centre providers. In an advisory published on Saturday, the networking-gear manufacturer said that a patch is not yet available and provided no timeline for when one would be released.

Why this matters:

Zero days do not yet have patches available although the vulnerability is publicly known and in some cases, as in this case, already being targeted by malicious actors.

On the day the Titanic sank the crew received 7 iceberg warnings, yet such was the competition to make the crossing in 6 days orders were given to maintain the speed of the ship in the mistaken belief they could carry on unaffected.

Now if the crew had heeded the warnings to slow down they would have stood a much better chance of avoiding the icebergs and in particular of course the iceberg that led to their sinking.

That's not to say good security means you need to slow down.

Whilst not wishing to mix metaphors brakes were not added to cars to make them go slower, quite the opposite - brakes were needed to allow cars to go faster.

Just maybe don't ignore the warnings in the belief that somehow you will remain unaffected as you sail you own ships through seas unfortunately filled with icebergs.

The global cost of cyber crime per minute to reach $11.4 million by 2021

Cyber crime costs organisations $24.7, YOY increase of more than $2 every minute, according to a new report. It will also have a per-minute global cost of $11.4 million by 2021, a 100% increase over 2015.

The report covers the top threats facing today’s organizations, which are proliferating at a clip of 375 per minute, and reflects the current surge in attacks leveraging the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other malicious activity

  • 1.5 attacks on computers with an Internet connection per minute

  • 375 new threats per minute

  • 16,172 records compromised per minute

  • 1 vulnerability disclosed every 24 minutes

  • 5.5 vomain infringements detected per minute

  • 1 Magecart attack every 16 minutes

  • 1 COVID-19 blacklisted domain every 15 minutes

  • 35 COVID-19 spam emails analysed per minute

Why this matters:

The sheer scale of today’s threat activity is driven by a variety of factors, including that cyber crime is easier than ever to participate in and better threat technology makes cyber criminals more effective and wealthier than in the past.

Trend Micro Blocks 28 Billion Cyber-Threats in H1 2020

Trend Micro blocked nearly nine million COVID-related threats in the first half of 2020, the vast majority of which were email-borne, it revealed in a new mid-year roundup report.

The security giant said it detected 8.8 million cyber-threats leveraging the virus as a lure or theme for attacks, 92% of which were delivered by spam emails.

However, the figure represents less than 1% of the total of 27.8 billion threats the vendor blocked in the first six months of the year.

This chimes with data from Microsoft and others which suggests that cyber-criminals merely repurposed existing campaigns to take advantage of COVID-19. As such, the pandemic itself has not prompted a rise in overall cyber crime levels.

However, the data does show conclusively that email remains the number one threat vector: 93% of total blocked threats were heading for users’ inboxes.

As part of this trend, Business Email Compromise (BEC) detections increased by 19% from the second half of 2019. This is due in part to scammers trying to capitalize on distracted home workers who may be more exposed to social engineering, and less able to check with colleagues if a money transfer request is legitimate or not.

Why this matters:

Email remains the number one threat to all firms and by far the most likely way firms will end up being breached, and this depends on your users being aware and switched on and efficient at spotting email borne attacks as technology solutions alone are not good at blocking email based attacks. Criminals will always exploit current events and crises to improve their effectiveness of their attacks.

Malicious Attachments Remain a Cyber Criminal Threat Vector Favourite

Malicious attachments continue to be a top threat vector in the cybercriminal world, even as public awareness increases and tech companies amp up their defences.

While attachment threat vectors are one of the oldest malware-spreading tricks in the books, email users are still clicking on malicious attachments that hit their inbox, whether it’s a purported “job offer” or a pretend “critical invoice.”

The reason why threat actors are still relying on this age-old tactic, researchers say, is that the attack is still working. Even with widespread public awareness about malicious file attachments, attackers are upping their game with new tricks to avoid detection, bypass email protections and more. The attack vector is still widespread enough where tech giants are re-inventing new ways to try to stomp it out, with Microsoft just this week rolling out a feature for Office 365 that aims to protect users against malicious attachments sent via email, for instance.

Why this matters:

Email attachments, such as PDF or Office files, are an easy vector to deliver malicious content to end users. For enterprises, the risk is that malicious actors can use these attachments to establish a toe-hold at the outermost edges of the enterprise, and then wait and wind their way to the crown jewels in their data stores.

The State of Exploit Development: 80% of Exploits Publish Faster than CVEs

With the ever-increasing number of new vulnerabilities, vulnerability management becomes one of the most critical processes in ensuring continuous business operation. While it is clear that timely patching is essential, it’s also important to know quantitatively how a delay could increase risk. What are the chances that attackers breach an organisation using a CVE just disclosed or using an unknown (zero-day) vulnerability? To understand the state of vulnerability disclosure and exploit development, researchers analysed 45,450 the publicly available exploits in the Exploit Database at the time of this writing. The research correlated the exploit data with vulnerability and patch information to study exploit development in multiple facets.

The research reveals that:

Of the 45,450 public exploits in Exploit Database, there are 11,079 (~26%) exploits in Exploit Database that have mapped CVE numbers.

Among those 11,079 exploits:

14% are zero-day (published before the vendors release the patch), 23% are published within a week after the patch release and 50% are published within a month after the patch release. On average, an exploit is published 37 days after the patch is released. Patch as soon as possible – the risk of a vulnerability being exploited increases quickly after vendors release the patches.

80% of public exploits are published before the CVEs are published. On average, an exploit is published 23 days before the CVE is published. Software and hardware may also have vulnerabilities with public exploits that don’t have CVEs. Check security updates from vendors frequently and apply updates as soon as possible.

Analysis of the entire CVE list since 1999 found that, on average, a CVE is published 40 days after its CVE-ID is assigned. Of the 177,043 entries analysed more than 10,000 CVEs have been in “reserved” status for more than two years. It shows that there is a long delay between vulnerability discovery and CVE publication.

Why this matters:

Patches should always be applied as soon as possible, exploits either follow very soon after vulnerability disclosure but as this study shows sometimes vulnerabilities are being exploited before fixes are released. The longer between fixes being released and being applied the more vulnerable you are to attack.

Forget your space-age IT security systems. It might just take a $1m bribe and a willing employee to be pwned

A Russian citizen is accused of flying to America in a bid to bribe a Tesla employee to infect their bosses' IT network with ransomware.

Egor Kriuchkov has been charged with one count of conspiracy to intentionally cause damage to a protected computer. He was nabbed by the Feds at Los Angeles airport and is behind bars awaiting trial.

It is claimed Kriuchkov, 27, was the point man of a plot to get data-stealing malware onto the network of an unspecified US company in Nevada and then use the lifted data to extort the corporation for millions of dollars: paid up, or the internal files get leaked and file systems scrambled.

To do this, Kriuchkov and his associates back in Russia had recruited a worker at the business, it is claimed, and promised to pay $500,000 for placing the malware onto its network. The bribe was later increased to $1m to persuade the employee, along with an $11,000 advance, yet instead he went to his bosses, and the FBI was brought in, we're told.

According special agent Michael Hughes, in late July Kriuchkov travelled from Russia to Reno, Nevada, where the employee worked, and over the early weeks of August tried to win over the employee to join the conspiracy. This included a night out for the worker and friends at a Lake Tahoe resort, followed by Kriuchkov pulling the worker aside and convincing them to play a key role in the operation, it is claimed.

Why this matters:

Again this shows that employees are more likely than your technical systems to be exploited by malicious actors, fortuitously for Tesla the employee didn’t take the bribe but many staff in different organisations would be tempted. Imagine if the employee that was approached was already feeling disgruntled against their employer.

Ex-Cisco staffer charged with deliberately deleting 400+ VMs

A disgruntled former Cisco employee has pleaded guilty to intentionally deleting hundreds of the networking firm's virtual machines (VMs), according to an IT News report.

Sudhish Kasaba Ramesh, an ex-Cisco engineer who left the company in April 2018, accessed the firm's AWS environment months later and deleted a total of 456 VMs, which the company used to run the WebEx Teams application.

In a statement, issued before a US federal court in San Jose by the US Department of Justice and the FBI, it was said that Ramesh “intentionally accessed a protected computer without authorization and recklessly caused damage”.

“During his unauthorized access, Ramesh admitted that he deployed a code from his Google Cloud Project account that resulted in the deletion of 456 virtual machines for Cisco’s WebEx Teams application, which provided video meetings, video messaging, file sharing, and other collaboration tools,” the statement said.

Why this matters:

Insiders will always be amongst the biggest threats to every organisation and the damage a disgruntled employee or former employer could cause should never be underestimated. Any time a member of staff leaves an organisation it must be ensured that they no longer have access to any accounts accessed in the course of the performing their duties, and doubly so for accounts with privileged or elevated permissions, for the very reason they could do so much damage.

North Korean hackers ramp up bank heists: U.S. government cyber alert

North Korean hackers are tapping into banks around the globe to make fraudulent money transfers and cause ATMs to spit out cash, the U.S. government warned on Wednesday.

A technical cyber security alert jointly written by four different federal agencies, including the Treasury Department and FBI, said there had been a resurgence in financially motivated hacking efforts by the North Korean regime this year after a lull in activity.

“Since February 2020, North Korea has resumed targeting banks in multiple countries to initiate fraudulent international money transfers and ATM cash outs,” the warning reads.

U.S. law enforcement titled the hacking campaign “Fast Cash” and blamed North Korea’s Reconnaissance General Bureau, a spy agency, for it. They described the operation as going on since at least 2016 but ramping up in sophistication and volume recently.

Why this matters:

Over the last several years, North Korea has been blamed by U.S. authorities and private sector cyber security companies for hacking numerous banks in Asia, South America and Africa.

North Korean cyber actors have demonstrated an imaginative knack for adjusting their tactics to exploit the financial sector as well as any other sector through illicit cyber operations.

New Zealand stock exchange resumes trade after cyber attacks, government activates security systems

New Zealand’s stock exchange resumed trading on Friday, after facing disruptions for four consecutive days in the wake of cyber attacks this week, while the government said national security systems had been activated to support the bourse.

There is no clarity on who was behind these two “offshore” attacks, but the failure to stop them has raised questions about New Zealand’s security systems, experts said.

NZX Ltd had to halt trading until afternoon on Friday, after crashing earlier due to network connectivity issues, marking the fourth day that trading has been hit.

Organisations of all sizes are vulnerable to attacks, larger firms are vulnerable because of the sheer number of users and the complexity of their systems, smaller firms because they often lack maturity and don’t have the most appropriate controls and protections in place. Firms also need to make sure they have plans in place to recover and return to operational effectiveness as quickly as possible.

If you're connecting to an unsecured access point or a network where the key is publicly available, such as an airport, coffee shop or public event then you're susceptible to a host of different types of attacks from people who want to steal your personal or company data. Connecting to these networks without considering the security implications will mean that any malicious individual lurking about could have complete and unrestricted access to the data you transmit and receive, including usernames and passwords as well as the data on your device. They could even install malware that could compromise your more secure devices at home or at work when you reconnect to those networks later.

One popular technique to exploit people looking for "free Wi-Fi" is to advertise a free hotspot which is in fact a malicious network to capture data or install malware on the devices that connect to it.

The best way to avoid the risks is to only connect to networks that you trust and if you really must connect to an unsecured Wi-Fi hotspot then use a VPN. A VPN will wrap traffic to and from your device in an encrypted tunnel to prevent it from being intercepted or captured.
